On the occasion of his vesture, the new name of Bro. Joseph was imposed upon Bro. Martial to express his change of life. For all those who could not attend, we offer the moving video of the ceremony. It is a public statement of the brother's decision to devote his life to God for ever: "With the help of God, I hope and desire to persevere unto death in my sacred purpose" (Ritual of the taking of habit). You may watch it on Gloria.tv or on Youtube.

We commend his perseverance and the entire community to your prayers. Three further vocations will join us until the Assumption.

As in previous years, we travelled to Paris to take part in the pilgrimage of Notre-Dame de Chretienté in which more than 6,000 young and not so young people walk the 100km to the cathedral at Chartres! We are with them to hear confessions, pray, sing, do penance and to taste the joys of a purified soul. The beginning was marked by a moment of great emotion: for the first time since the pilgrimage was founded 30 years ago, Holy Mass was celebrated with great ceremony in the cathedral in Paris, before a crowd whose one voice voice resonated in the arches as it sang a fully Catholic liturgy.

We took the opportunity to make a pilgrimage to the scared places of our monastic family: the abbey of Pierre-qui-Vire, where Father Muard, its founder, lived and died in the odour of sanctity; the abbey of Saint Benoit sur Loire, where we were able to say Mass on the altar of the relics of our holy Father, and finally the abbey of En Calcat, founded by Dom Romain Banquet.

We visited Lourdes as part of our itinerary: what a feeling it was for our 3 postulants to discover for the first time the sacred grotto where the Immaculate Conception appeared to St Bernadette and to which pilgrims come from all over the world to find the salvation for the sould and sometimes even also health in body. Since we have the honour of being called the Benedictines of the Immaculate, we came alsoe to kneel at length in prayer at the feet of Mary and to renew our total consecration to her. Having purified our souls by immersing them in the prayers of the holy Rosary, we also purified our bodies by plunging them in the pools filled with the miraculous water. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

On 21 March, the feast of St Benedict, Bishop Oliveri, bishop of our diocese of Albenga-Imperia, grants us the great grace of giving our little community the status of monastery:

“By virtue of the present decree We hereby confer on the public clerical assocation called Monastery of Saint Catherine of Siena in Villatalla, in the diocese of Albenga-Imperia, plublic legal personality (canon 116). […]

Hearthily we accompany this decree of our pastoral blessing on Father Jehan, on the members of the community and on all of those which will derive benefit from the monastic life and the benedictine spirituality by connecting with the Monastery of Saint Catherine of Siena.”

Tomorrow, on the 1st of March, we shall commemorate the second anniversary of the death of Dom Gerard († February 28, 2008), our founder at Bedoin and then at Le Barroux, and we shall celebrate a Requiem Mass on that day for him.

Barroux Abbey Church – Dom Gerard’s Funeral

We long with all our strength, here at Villatalla, to live in its purity the liturgical and monastic grace which Dom Gérard received at Bedoin in 1970, which he knew how to protect and pass on by example and by words (for which he had a gift): a grace of founding of which I was a privileged witness, being his first companion and disciple; a grace that was focused in the untiring quest for an interior life fed from the twofold source of the Benedictine Rule and the customs handed down partly by our elders, partly by the traditional and divine liturgy.

“In a spirit of unity within the Community, we do not concelebrate according to Paul VI’s rite, even outside the monastery.” (D. Gérard, April 25, 1997.)

Thirty-five years later, faced with a dispute, he would protest with force: “I repeat that I have never—never—wished to introduce the use of the new rite. Not only have I not wished it, but during thirty years we have held the course, formed the community in the sense of this faithfulness, defying prohibitions on this matter, which are changed now into gracious permissions and congratulations from high up”.
It is through both monastic and liturgical loyalty that the inner life establishes, little by little, its kingdom in our soul. Such was his deepest conviction. It is also by this dual loyalty that we shall testify to an authentic filial devotion. An authentic filial devotion which, as Jean Madiran points out, is not only “to recognise oneself as an insolvent debtor in one’s own being”, but also “to know that the received heritage has to be passed on and not to be used only for one’s own benefit”.

Filial devotion is not a ‘superfluous adornment’ of monastic life but a ‘condition of its survival’. Madiran’s harsh but true words, on the irreligious of the country apply equally and indeed more so, to the religious impiety:

“Because the irreligious person, neglecting or being unconcerned towards the intellectual and moral life he has received, although part of his being, is ungrateful towards those who have fed and armed his soul. He will be as a result unable to pass on in his turn, this immaterial wealth. Influenced, as we always are, more by actions than by speeches, he will pass on his own indifference, his own ingratitude. He will breathe and inspire a spirit of ignorance of the moral heritage of the homeland. If we do not honour, we start to neglect. We become indifferent. We find ourselves helpless in the face of mockery and contempt that sooner or later will move from the background to the forefront, and will speak up without restraint”. (Jean Madiran, Une Civilisation Blessée au Cœur, p. 34.)

“What does the past matter as the past, exclaimed Gustave Thibon then, do you not see that, when I cry on the breaking up of a tradition, it is, above all, of the future that I am thinking of? When I see a root rot I feel sorry for the flowers which will dry up tomorrow for lack of sap. These are the reasons why we must fervently keep the most sacred forms of the Catholic Liturgy.”

Earlier happiness (1977) at Bedoin, fruit of the founder’s grace

It is therefore with a filial gratitude, that this Monday, the 1st March, we will offer the holy sacrifice of the mass for the soul of the one who was for many, a beacon and for us a father and a teacher. He was able to show us the radiant path of the absolute monastic life.

Driven by this filial spirit, we are delighted that, in honour and memory of Dom Gerard, an Italian oblate of Le Barroux has undertaken a translation of his works in the beautiful and noble language of Dante. It can be found on a website (romualdica.blogspot.com). Dear Italian friends, you will find here a treasure for the spiritual life of your soul, and a genuine and eloquent heritage, which has been the background of monastic spirituality since it’s origins.

It is now a year and a half since we were invited by Mgr Oliveri to transplant the monastic life into Villatalla. Thanks to numerous friends and benefactors, we hope to finish setting up house soon. But at the moment, what we need more than material help are your prayers, so that the Lord will send us solid vocations as pioneers of the foundation.

Say an Ave every day for Vocations for Villatalla. Thank you!

We ask you, who are reading our blog with kindness and charity, for this alms of an Ave every day for this intention.

We were hoping soon for the presence of Brother Ansgar Santogrossi, who had come to spend the past two summers with us and had intended to remain with us for good this year. Man proposes and God disposes, and Providence has now decided otherwise. As for Brother Egidio-Marie, who made a six-month trial with the community, he has finally decided to return among his brothers the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate.

We find ourselves then only two again, Brother Toussaint and myself, to carry out the daily tasks and chant the entire Divine Office as well as conventual Mass. It makes me remember the beginning of Bedoin in 1970, a beginning which called for always a great generosity and constancy.

With the grace of God, everything is possible, but prudence teaches that it isn’t wise to put too much strain on “Brother Ass” (as St. Francis called the body). Your prayers to obtain vocations are the most necessary and most precious help that you can offer us for the development in number and fervor of this community which is still in the process of coming into existence.

We are expecting, true, three postulants for spring and summer. May Heaven grant that they are made for us! Now then, your Ave! We thank you with all our hearts.
The maiden bears the lovely name of Saint Athanasia, from the Greek Athanatos, immortal.

White waxen figure containing her remains. In the right hand, a vase contains her dried blood. Sur la châsse, un second reliquaire contenant le chef.

Her relics, whole, were discovered in the Roman catacombs with the wreckage of an ampoule of Venetian glass where the martyr’s blood had been kept.

At some point now unknown to us, the relics were transferred to Florence and venerated in the basilica of the Trinity. Then, a legal statement of December 30, 1891, signed by the curé, shows us that they were given to the sisters of the Interior of Mary (what a lovely title!) at the Grand Montrouge at Paris.

Placed in 1904 at the home of the vicar of Montrouge, the saint’s body would not return among the Sisters because they had lost hope of re-forming their Congregation. In 1913 it was transferred to the Cardinal Archbishop of Paris, Mgr Amette, who entrusted it to the Poor Clares of Paris, in 5 Villa de Saxe.

At this moment, because of the vocations crisis, the convent must close its doors and liquidate all its goods. With the mediation of a Benedictine-oblate friend, the Mother Abbess offers to the monks of Villatalla the worthy relic, which, while waiting to be transferred to the church here, has been placed in the traditional school CoursSaint-Benoît (www.courssaintbenoit.fr), founded in Fontenay Mauvoisin by Luc Perrouin.

At the request of Higoumene Nikon, the superior of the Russian monastery Saint Pantalaimon at Moscow, Father Jehan gave him the small reliquary containing a part of the skull of the virgin martyr for the church of St Nikita the Megalomartyr at Moscow, and wrote these lines to him:

“We will ask this saint of Paradise, who will henceforth unite us in prayer, to obtain for us the grace of a perfect ecclesial union under one shepherd’s crook. May the prayer of Jesus be heard: that they may be one as We are one”.

At last St. Athanasia’s sacred relic, expatriated for more than a century in France, made her return to Italy on October 23, and comes now to bless and protect by her presence the little monastic community and the parish of Villatalla.

She will rest henceforth at the foot of the altar of Notre-Dame du Secours, at the right side of the church, where monks and faithful come each day to recommend themselves to the power of her intercession.

“Among all the miracles of Thy power, Thou hast given, O Lord, even to weak young women to receive the martyr’s victory. In the day in which we celebrate the heavenly birthday of St. Athanasia, Virgin and Martyr, give us, by inspiring us with her example, the grace to persevere to Thee” (collect of the Mass).
MBIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707471784160018742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-334383405874056737.post-60361604650861657742009-08-11T12:17:00.012+02:002010-03-11T05:32:11.267+01:00Visit to Mons. Guido Pozzo
A few days after our annual retreat, another event — important for us and the traditionalist world —, was our visit to the new secretary of the Pontifical Commissione Ecclesia Dei, Mons. Pozzo, who had only been recently installed.

Together with Brother Ansgar Santogrossi and Brother Toussaint we were received in a most cordial manner.

We simply and directly mentioned our situation in Villatalla and Mons.Oliveri’s welcome in respect of our own right, which foresees the exclusive use of the traditional rite of Mass.
Then we talked about the interpretation of the conciliar documents in the light of the imminent discussions between the Vatican and the priestly fraternity of St Pius X.

So herewith a short resume of the meeting which certainly marks an opening and a step forward towards the recognition of the values defended by the traditional movement, even if we do not share all points stated by the new secretary of the Ecclesia Dei Commission .

1. Mons. Pozzo told us that according to the letter accompanying the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, the roman rite exists under two forms and that no priest “can refuse to celebrate in principle, in either form». In practical terms it means that, in his opinion, a priest who normally celebrates in the extraordinary form and who finds himself in a situation of pastoral necessity where the competent authority demands a celebration in the ordinary form, should accept to do so.

Mons. Pozzo listened on the other hand to the opinion Mons.Stankiewicz, dean of the tribunal of the Rota, had expressed to Fr.Jehan after having read carefully the constitutions of Le Barroux and according to which a monk-priest of Le Barroux does not have the right to celebrate according to the Novus Ordo Missae, be it inside or outside the monastery. So the obligation to celebrate according to the ancient rite should be a particular right/obligation for the monks of Le Barroux, wherever they might be.

Mons.Pozzo said he knew Mons.Stankiewicz. He simply added by saying that if the pontifical letter accompanying Summorum Pontificum states that priests celebrating according to the ancient rite cannot refuse as a matter of principle the celebration of the newer form, this nevertheless leaves the possibility of a right proper to certain societies of which the members are to celebrate according to the ancient rite exclusively.

2. Concerning the Second Vatican Council, for Mons.Pozzo, the problem has less to do with the actual texts than with their abusive interpretation and application, according to that well known “spirit of the Council”. But after so many years of a quasi-monopoly of public expression in the media and in the Church, it has now become very difficult indeed to separate this “spirit of the council” from the actual texts. We must then explain this difference to the FSSPX (Fraternity of St. Pius X) and, therefore, its members will now be able to accept the texts of the Council.

When he was responded to that the FSSPX knows this line of thinking very well but continues to state there are serious problems within the conciliar texts themselves, Mons.Pozzo altered his view:
* It is true, he added, that there are badly formulated and unclear parts in these texts. This is due to the fact that the conciliar fathers wanted to avoid the classical theological language, in order to speak in a way “more accessible to man at that time”. This of course, can bring up ambiguities, but it does not mean a deliberate intention to change or deny Catholic traditional doctrine. On the contrary, the fathers considered catholic doctrine to be indisputable. Only the manner of expression was altered for pastoral reasons. In this view it is therefore legitimate to criticize unclear parts of the texts from a doctrinal point of view, as taught before. But one should not give them a heterodox meaning, as there was never any intention to change traditional doctrine. According to a healthy hermeneutic, the lines of Vatican II giving difficulty are to be understood in a manner not going against the previous constant Magisterium, as it is the same Magisterium teaching in and for all times.
* Thus are to be distinguished in the documents, an indeed in every document, the re-affirmation of dogma and traditional faith, proposals taught as doctrine from the authentic Magisterium of exhortations, directives and finally of opinions and theological explanations brought forward by the Council without any pretention to bind (pretesa di vincolare) the catholic conscience. The pure and simple acceptance of opinions the Council itself did not impose with the pretension of demanding intellectual consent are therefore not to be imposed on Catholics. Concerning this point, it would be useful to go through the theological notes that theology and the Magisterium brought together over the centuries. Unfortunately, even bishops today are not capable of making such nuances in the documents of the Church.
MBIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707471784160018742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-334383405874056737.post-20846770331551764742009-08-08T11:37:00.002+02:002010-02-22T14:11:11.273+01:00Annual retreat
From 3-8 August Rev. Fr. Andre Forest, founder of the Canons regular of St Augustine in Sant’Animo near Sienna, will come and preach our annual retreat.

The enthusiastic and reinvigorating theme will be that of the beatitudes: They are the life-rule of the New Testament, given by Christ himself, the elating path traced by his grace, far more demanding than the Decalogue but the only ones capable of uniting ourselves intimately to God in his Trinitarian mystery:

“Bessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven […], Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
Such is the Christian paradox: participating in the sufferings and in the Cross of Christ is a source of immeasurable interior joy. “By this wood joy for the entire world has come” (Good Friday liturgy).
Mario Oliveri, provided us with the grace and pleasure of his company in order to celebrate Pontifical Mass for the solemnity of St. Benedict. He came with a good number of priest friends and acquaintances of our house, including Canon Guitard of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign High Priest. In his homily, Bishop Oliveri first of all emphasized the holiness and spiritual influence of our founder: “On this holy day which finds us gathered in this parish church of Villatalla, our attention is drawn in particular to the holy soul of St. Benedict, father of a multitude of consecrated souls, father of monasticism in the West, a father who built a new mansion in the great house which the Church is; St. Benedict who is a teacher of the spiritual life, a divinely enlightened teacher of the monastic life. Let us pay special attention as well to all his sons, to all those who wish to live according to his teaching. We need to pay special attention to them so as to understand how to live well our Christian lives; we should take them as examples; they are among us, here as elsewhere in the Church, as examples who live the fullness of the demand which the Gospel [we have just heard] speaks about: ‘Whoever leaves houses, brothers, sisters, father, mother or children or fields for the sake of my name will receive a hundredfold and inherit eternal life’.”

And then, with the faith and authority of a true pastor, Bishop Oliveri spoke a few words about the silence of the Canon of the Mass which made a strong impression on the souls of the hearers: “Oh, my dear brethren, how beautiful it would be to be recollected during this holy celebration, in these moments of total or almost total silence! Especially during the Eucharistic Prayer, when this unique [single] Sacrifice arrives, sacramentally present, on our altar... Our attitude is not so much to say many things, or to understand each word spoken, but to keep what is happening vividly present to the soul, and to place ourselves in full and complete adoration,l in the state of contemplation and assent.
“Let nothing --says the Rule of St. Benedict-- be preferred to Christ” and then “let nothing be preferred to His Work.” But what is the Work of Christ? It is the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son, the mystery of the Son who is made flesh, who died on the Cross to rise on the third day. It is the mystery of the Cross, the mystery of Christ, the mystery of his Sacrifice. The Work of God is the whole divine liturgy.
Dear Brethren, believe this, accept this, live this. There is nothing more important in your life than participation, your participation, in the celebration of the divine mysteries, the divine liturgy.
Now, you understand why holy monks, particularly Benedictine monks, must live singing all day long the praises of the Lord, praying continually, celebrating the divine liturgy of the Sacrifice of Christ and the Hours, the holy Hours, the Hours of the prayer of the whole Church.
As for us, we promise to these dear monks who are established here in this presbytery of the parish church, who offer the sacraments and pray in this parish church, we promise them to be always near them and we assure them of our ardent prayer that they be saints and good models.
Under the rectory we had a storage cellar. In order to free up a room in the house, we have transformed it so that it now serves as the library. Thus we have a fourth cell in the house, so that we can lodge Brother Ansgar who is returning to be with us for the summer.

AFTER

As for the cellar, it underwent an astonishing transformation in the space of a few months. After the addition of a wall in the middle, the right side now serves as both library and chapter room. The left half includes a laundry room and a work area for household tinkering or repairs.

Before taking a more detailed look at all this, here are three photographs from the beginning of the labor, which had to be a bit furious and relentless. The ground was too high: the hardest and longest part of the work was removing 60 cm of earth and rock. .

A big power drill, and a lot of energy, got the job done, little by little.

In order to break up chunks of rock without dynamite, one must first find their weak points. A well-placed tool then allows one to blow up the big rocks which had appeared invincible..

And as the days pass, a pile of smaller stones accumulates, slowly but surely.

Unfortunately we didn't take any more photos than what you see here of the work while in progress. But you can see the final result:

The left side and the wall separating the two new rooms.

And the right side turned into a library and chapter room.

So we now have buildings for the common life (church, chapter room, refectory, library) which will be sufficient to welcome a few vocations which are currently foreseen.

On the other hand, we will soon need more than four cells. Several parts of houses adjacent to the rectory should be available for us to buy, and which we would then turn into new cells. Thank you for your generosity in helping us to acquire them.
Because of liturgical obligations in his cathedral of Albenga which is under the same patronage, the feast was anticipated the day before, September the 28th.

The faithful met on Saint John’s Square at the entrance to the village. A statue of St. Michael enthroned was carried on the shoulders of four men. Behind the processional Cross held by the altar server, Don Sandro, pastor, led the rosary. At 4 P.M., the Bishop’s car entered the square. The rosary was finished with a Gloria Patri, the car stopped, the parish priest opened the door of the car and the bishop came out, wearing amaranth cassock and biretta. He greeted ecclesiastical and civil authorities, the little crowd squeezed up around him, and he blessed them all.

At once the procession began to make its way to the church, to the rhythm of popular songs. The cross opened the way, followed by the crowd, the monks, the clergy, the Bishop and the statue of the archangel.

Upon entering the church, with the sound of the pipe organs and the singing of the schola, the Bishop moved up the central aisle, again blessing the crowd left and right, then kneeling and reciting the prayers of the Pontifical upon arrival at the sanctuary. Then he took his seat to hear the welcome speeches from the pastor, Father Jehan and the mayor.

During the pontifical mass which followed, celebrated in the traditional rite, Bishop Oliveri pronounced a vigourous sermon on the importance of spiritual life founded on Catholic faith and doctrine, and he ended with words expressing benevolence and paternal friendship for the monks:
“Very dear brethren, You have now among you the presence of the monks. The goal of their life and dedication has been fully and well evoked a few minutes ago by dear Father Jehan de Belleville at the beginning of our meeting. They are a continual reminder of fidelity to the Lord. They are a continual reminder to always give our Lord the first place: He and He only. Everything else is secondary. Everything else must be used by us to walk towards the eternity of the Lord. Everything. The whole life of the human being has no other goal than to purify him, to prepare him to enter eternal life.
I am happy to learn that you were welcomed here, as it should be, according to justice and charity. I am happy to know that you have the support of this small population so that you do not lack any of the small needs which always accompany man on his pilgrimage through time.
I am asking you, dear faithful : continue to support them. Please God that in this place they find a suitable environment, well adapted, to be able to grow and truly become a monastery able to give back the luminous testimony that the Lord is the Lord and that nobody else can take His place. Thank you! Thank you, dear monks.
I bless you and will accompany you with a huge joy so that in any need, you can find in me a father, you can find in me someone who understands you. And I pray the Lord that what you found in me, you may also find in all the priests of my diocese, in all the faithful and particularly in the faithful of this parish of Saint Michael The Archangel in Villatalla.
May all be blessed, and blessed you are if you are in friendship with the Lord”.
After the Mass, Bishop Oliveri visited the monastic house Santa Caterina da Siena, next to the church, and proceeded to its blessing.
Upon coming out, he greeted various persons and groups, for example the carabinieri who attended the ceremony.
Then Father Jehan accompanied the Bishop back to Saint John’s Square, where the faithful were waiting with tables of delicacies and beverages laid out by the ladies of the parish. Bishop Oliveri departed quickly, but left great joy in all hearts.
Thus on two days in September 2008, the Bishop of Albenga-Imperia has celebrated Mass publically in the traditional rite, first for the Franciscan contemplative sisters in Alassio, on the 23rd, and then on the 28th in Villatalla. But that is not all, because on October 26th, feast of St. Maurice and his martyr companions, in the co-cathedral of Imperia, he will again celebrate the ancient rite, and this time a pontifical Mass, during which seven Franciscan sisters of the Immaculate Conception will pronounce their solemn vows.
Jehan and Brother Toussaint are in Lourdes today, not only to observe the jubilee of the apparition and gain a plenary indulgence, but also to renew their Marian consecration and entrust to Mary’s Immaculate Heart the monastic work begun in Villatalla.

They want to follow the example of the Franciscans of the Immaculate (founded on August 2nd, 1970 by two Conventual Franciscan friars, Fr. Stefano Maria Manelli and Fr. Gabriele Pelettieri), whose founding charism adds to the three vows of religion a particular consecration to the Immaculate, according to the Marian spirituality of St. Maximilian Kolbe.
The most recent general chapter of the Franciscans of the Immaculate, which took place on Pentecost, decided to make provision, as an order, for the traditional Latin rite of Mass. All their priests (currently about 100) must from now on be familiar with it.
This decision — of great importance for their religious family and for the Church — together with the climate of humility which is felt among them, seems explainable only as a particular favor from blessed Mary.
Fr. Jehan, who spent more than six months in Rome in one of their houses, saw in this spiritual miracle obtained through Mary's mediation, a sign from Providence for the path he too should follow.

On March 10th, 2008, after the hour of Sext, Fr. Manelli gave Fr. Jehan a Miraculous Medal which he now wears visibly over his heart, as his brother Franciscans do. "Father Jehan taught us the Tridentine Mass," the Franciscan founder was able to say, "and we for our part give him the Miraculous Medal." And Fr. Jehan concluded, "It is unquestionably Mary who raised up the family of the Franciscans of the Immaculate; if it is the will of God that a new Benedictine family be born, they will be the Benedictines of the Immaculate." The reaction of the Franciscans was thunderous applause.

From now on, Franciscans and Benedictines are joined like two branches of a family under the mantle of the Immaculate in fidelity to their respective religious rules and to the liturgical tradition of Holy Church, notably to the ancient ritual of Mass from which "countless saints copiously fed their piety towards God".

MBIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707471784160018742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-334383405874056737.post-31777770391100476632008-07-16T07:43:00.007+02:002010-02-22T13:42:12.560+01:00Canonical Status
Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
and 150th anniversary of the last apparition of Our Lady in Lourdes

With the consent of Bishop Mario Oliveri (in his letter of welcome of February 6th), as well as the consent of the Abbot and of the council of seniors of the abbey of Le Barroux, the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei willlingly grants to Father Jehan de Belleville and to Brother Toussaint Menut a pontifical indult of exclaustration which allows them to live their monastic life in the diocese of Albenga-Imperia.
MBIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11707471784160018742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-334383405874056737.post-43348091005159786512008-07-05T08:07:00.003+02:002010-02-22T13:42:12.547+01:00Official Reception in the City Council Chamber of Prelà
After the reception in Villatalla by Don Sandro and the population, the mayor of the town of Prelà, which unites under its administration several small villages, including Villatalla, also wanted to honour the recent arrival of the Benedictine monks on its territory.
On July 5th, in the city council chamber, in the presence of his assistant and his council, of the pastor of Dolcedo and the mayor of a neighbouring town, the mayor gave the monks a solemn reception which included not less than five heartfelt and energetic speeches, some of them characterized by a high degree of political thought. Indeed, all underlined the importance of a religious and monastic presence which will be an assertion of our Christian culture so threatened in our days by materialism and an ever stronger Muslim presence.
The moment for gifts followed: the monks received big baskets adorned with flowers and containing all kinds of regional products, including olive oil, tapenade, honey, stewed fruit of lemon, and wine. Today and for several days following, a third monk was with them, Brother Ansgar Santogrossi, of Mount Angel Abbey in the United States.

In this little village, the last one situated on the heights of a valley which opens on the calm horizon of the Ligurian Mediterranean Sea, the arrival of the monks was a great event. The few remaining inhabitants - about thirty - gathered aroud their priest to welcome these men of God. Various priests and seminarians of the diocese, like fellow-members of a close brotherhood, wished by their presence to give joyful support to a work of prayer and Tradition in their own diocese.

In cassock, but wearing for the occasion all his ecclesiastical insignia, the parish priest addressed Fr. Jehan:
“In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Who are you? What are you seeking?
— We are sons of Saint Benedict and come to pray and work as commanded us in the Holy Gospel and our Holy Rule.
— Does our Bishop of Albenga know you?
— Yes he does, and he asks you to give us hospitality.
— What the village of Saint Michael [i.e. Villatalla] can offer you, is a roof, a church and a small piece of land.
— Praised be God! And we will pray the Lord, the Madonna and Saint Michael for you”.
Then he finishes by these words: “Benedictus qui venit in Nomine Domini. Procedamus in Pace!”

Then the procession starts with the singing of litanies, with the cross in the lead, followed by the altar servers, the local confraternity, the clergy and the small but fervent population. Once inside the church dedicated to Saint Michael, Don Sandro approaches Fr. Jehan and solemnly hands him the large key to the church, then leads him towards the campanile so he can sound the bells as a sign of taking possession.

There followed Vespers and, on this day in which the liturgy celebrates the Visitation, when the Magnificat canticle was first heard, hearts joined their thanksgiving with the one, pure and humble prayer of the Immaculate Virgin.

Then, wearing a Roman chasuble kept in the sacristy here, Father Jehan, accompanied by the deacon and the sub-deacon, went up to the altar to sing Mass according to the ancient Latin rite.

During the homily, Don Sandro recalled the undying gratitude of Ligurians toward the sons of Saint Benedict who introduced the cultivation of the olive tree over Liguria's valleys and hills, helping to make the region famous for its oil. So it is a work of justice and of piety, he explained, to welcome the spiritual sons of our benefactors of long ago.
In his turn, Father Jehan, after explaining the purpose of the monastic life ordered to the interior life through prayer and work, expressed the overflowing gratitude of his heart. First towards Bishop Oliveri, who received him in the Albenga-Imperia diocese under his pastoral responsibility (see letter of welcome of February 6th). Then towards Don Marco Cuneo, archpriest of Artallo and canon-priest of Imperia cathedral, who was a most efficacious and wise ambassador of the traditional Benedictine cause, and friend of the first moments. Towards Don Sandro too, who quietly, charitably and efficiently directed the effort toward obtaining a suitable site in Villatalla: without him, nothing could have been accomplished. And finally towards the faithful of the parish, among whom there are already generous benefactors, not to mention everyone else, for all have shown the monks benevolence and charity with a smile and with joy at welcoming souls vowed to prayer and worship.

At the end of the ceremony, in the shade of the trees next to the church, beverages and the traditional local pizzas supplied by the ladies provided the opportunity to make better acquaintance.

More photos ->

Brother Ansgar Santogrossi will leave Villatalla on July the 14th to visit relatives in Abruzzo. Fr. Jehan to Mgr Oliveri
†
PAX

To His Excellency,
Monsignor Mario OLIVERI
Bishop of Albenga-Imperia

Excellency and Dear Monsignor,

Thank you with all my heart for having phoned me yesterday and for having told me very simply your thought about the problem of concelebrations that divides our communauty. Our conversation suggested me a few thoughts of which I would like to open my heart to your Excellency.
[…]
Strictly looking at the Code of Canon Law, canon #902 lets to hear that the general rule in the Holy Church is the individual celebration of the mass and that the concelebration is only allowed (sacerdotes Eucharistiam concelebrare possunt), that the concelebration is even sometimes forbidden and that, in all the cases, freedom stands for each priest to celebrate individually. So it would be unjust to put a strain on each priest and on each community for not concelebrating.

If our community built itself around the exclusively traditional rite, it was therefore its right and moreover Church admitted it as such through its Constitutions. After having attentively read those Constitutions, my former professor at the University of Law of the Opus Dei, Antoni Bishop Stankiewicz, presently dean of the Roman Rota, gave me in June 2006 a full confirmation of it.The Proper Law (lex propria) of the diverse Institutes is not a territorial law, leading to think for example that the traditional rite of the mass is an obligation only inside the abbey. The comment of the Code by the University of Salamanca on the contrary explains, about the Can. #13, that “some laws affect directly people whom they are intended to, not because of their link with a territory, but for a motive that touch them more personally, so that these laws follow the people who are subjected to them everywhere they go”. So our proper law obliges us, even outside the monastery.

It is obvious that this Community choice, canonised by the Church, is based on a conviction of faith, that hierarchy did not always include and even less accepted. Linked “collectively” to ecclesiastic institutions in crisis, the bishops, too often impregnated with the mind of the world and with its ideologies, were only paralysing the supernatural life in souls. After forty years of such a regime, its dramatic consequences have spread out sadly under our eyes. And those who among the bishops admit the above and deplore it, do not always succeed in reacting with the necessary means and vigour.

Our attachment to the traditional rite is a wedding of faith and love that, in the image of the conjugal union, obliges us to an exclusive fidelity. It supposes and shows a theology and a pastoral that cannot match with a liturgy which turn the back on The Lord for the dialogue and “the being together”.

Cardinal Ratzinger had already noted (in La mia vita, ed. San Paolo, Roma, 1997) the “very grievous damage inflicted on the faith by the liturgical reform”. The denunciation and unmasking of the modernist taboo of being “in conformity with the spirit of the Council” is gradually opening people’s minds, allowing increasing numbers of thelogians and of the clergy to recognize publicly the deficiencies and the doctrinal ambiguity of N.O.M. And, as noted by John-Paul II, in Ecclesia de Eucharistia, n ° 10, “The Eucharist is too great a gift to tolerate any lessening or any ambiguity”.

Such is the drama which saw a traditional reaction: while wishing to conserve the Ecclesiastical hierarchy wanted by our Lord, it refuses to make friends with a ritual in which, although valid and lawful, it does not admit the authentic expression of faith without ambiguity. Cardinal Ratzinger was entirely aware of this when he wrote in his autobiography: “I am persuaded that the crisis of the Church which we are living today is widely based on the disintegration of liturgy”. Is not this the fundamental reason for which the pope himself desires to reform the liturgical reform bringing it back into line with the traditional Mass?

It is true that this serious fault of the current liturgy, even when it is celebrated with the necessary dignity, is not always and easily observable to theological minds because the language of liturgy is not that of doctrine. The latter handles interior concepts, the former exterior signs. Doctrine speaks intelligence, whereas liturgy speaks to the whole human being, body and soul. Liturgy, said Péguy, is “stretched-out” theology. If liturgy is the work of the faith of our Fathers, it is as a result not only its expression but also its guardian. Anything which shocks the traditional liturgical sensibility is, to say the least, to be considered dubious. To give one example: the altars where the priest has his back to the tabernacle are an affront to the traditional liturgical instinct. I know of only one bishop — and this honour goes to you, Monsignor — who has requested his priests to remove this table from in front of the altar. [Liturgical direction indeed means that the worship which we return is first for honour and glory of God and not autocelebration of the assembly which, has talks oblige, require to move the crucifix on the quoting; in the centre, he would be too embarrassing.] This sacred liturgy which has been handed down to us, part of the 2000 year-old tradition of the Church, is Opus Dei and not opus hominum, a liturgy, as Cardinal Ratzinger writes, coming from God and not something “manufactured”.

The traditional mentality, while admitting the canonical validity and legality of N.O.M., does not find in such a liturgy the plenary expression of its faith. Such is the deep reason of its distance in relation to that liturgy and of its instinctive refusal to use it. The concelebration, at Mass, which is neither a legal obligation nor a theological necessity, would not shock the traditional mentality as such. In our epoch, when people feel “together”, concelebration certainly expresses a fraternal link between priests which is a sign of ecclesial communion. What casts down the traditional mentality is more the rite than concelebration as such. If one must concelebrate, then one much prefers the older and traditional manner of doing it, with deacon, sub-deacon, acolytes etc., expressive of a “hierarchical” communion more in accordance with a sane ecclesiology than is the “egalitarian” communion which arose with the liturgical reform and which bears the heavy imprint of the democratic mentality of our day.

Dom Gérard, our founder, as Dom Guéranger by liturgical idea, wrote in one of his many works on this subject : “The Church, Wife and mystical Body of Christ, is the most manifold, most structured society, most organised into a hierarchy which exists: of the summit up to the base, everything carries in her the footprint of a sacred hierarchy emanated from its exhilarating centre. This celestial Church composed of angels and elected representatives whom our primitive painters represented the wide open eyes, reached hands and lined up by order around the Lamb, since the big Seraphs up to souls of the Purgatory which go up to set up among the countless choruses, it is it which is our true fatherland and while seeing it beginning to take shape under our eyes, we trains as eternity.” (La Sainte Liturgie, éd. Sainte-Madeleine, p. 59-60, Le Barroux, 1982.)

Please excuse, Monsignor, the frankness of the above comments which to be sure call for further nuances. My chief motive in writting this letter has been the desire for complete openness vis-à-vis your Excellency. I trust that any possible and legitimate differences of opinion, will not cast a shadow on our future collaboration, and that you will grant me a place in your diocese where, in union with the Pope, yourself and all the episcopal collegiate, I can help, through my filial obedience, prayer and example, in your apostolate. If for the time being you cannot provide a place where I can settle, alone or with one or two confrères, perhaps at least you could give me your agreement in principle to receive me in your dicocese? We could then look together for some practical solution, with the help of several of your diocesan priests who have shown great willingness to have a monastic presence and witness in their vicinity. I would never be abble to thank you enough for allowing me to pursue my Benedictine vocation in reacquired peace.

Let me end, Excellency and dear Monsignor, by expressing once again my filial and respectful good wishes, in Jesus and Mary.

Fr.
